From waste to value: The story of a special brew

Jun 21 2024

At Nordsol, we believe that every bit of waste should be used in the most beneficial way possible.

We share this principle with local beer brewer Uzzewuzze, who has crafted a unique beer for us using unsold baguettes. This beer exemplifies our commitment to sustainability and innovation, repurposing what would be waste into something valuable and enjoyable.

Our focus is on converting organic waste into bio-LNG, providing a sustainable fuel for long-haul heavy-duty transport. However, when waste is suitable for higher-value applications, we champion those uses. By brewing beer from unsold bread, Uzzewuzze is not only reducing waste but also showcasing the value found in organic byproducts. Cheers to that!

That’s exactly why we asked Uzzewuzze to craft this special beer – so we can raise a toast to a greener future with our fellow frontrunners in the energy transition.

The Ladder of Lansink

Optimal waste repurposing

At Nordsol, we embrace the philosophy of The Ladder of Lansink, a waste management hierarchy that emphasizes sustainability. It prioritizes waste prevention, followed by reuse, recycling, energy recovery, and finally disposal as the least favorable option. We follow this principle by enabling the repurposing of organic waste in the best possible way: transforming it into bio-LNG. This aligns with EU regulations and by doing so, we not only reduce environmental impact but also promote a circular economy.

Sustainable collaboration

Brewery with a sustainable twist

Our brewing partner Uzzewuzze has crafted a unique beer for us using unsold baguettes from Mamie Gourmande Bakery Instead of letting this bread go to waste, it becomes a key ingredient in our brew, highlighting the reuse step in the Ladder of Lansink. This innovative solution avoids less preferable options like anaerobic digestion or combustion, aligning with our ethos at Nordsol: using organic waste to create something valuable, and in this case, enjoyable.

Uzzewuzze is a great example of how we can creatively reuse organic waste. This Dutch brewery is known for its innovative approach to brewing, creating unique flavors with a sustainable twist. Check out their other creations here. The Nordsol beer highlights our shared values of sustainability and innovation.

Today

The fresh citrus notes serve as a reminder of the urgency and importance of taking action now for a greener tomorrow.

Beer versus bio‑LNG

Brewing beer versus producing bio-LNG

Bio‑LNG (biomethane) is a renewable fuel produced by purifying biogas derived from organic waste, such as agricultural residues, food waste, and other biodegradable materials. Similar to how Uzzewuzze uses unsold bread to craft beer, we take organic waste and convert it into clean, efficient energy.

This process involves anaerobic digestion, where microorganisms break down the waste to produce biogas, which is then upgraded to bio-LNG. Both processes, brewing beer and producing bio-LNG, showcase how organic waste can be transformed into valuable resources, reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainability.
