Key takeaways

Norway's next bio-LNG plant takes shape

  • Second Nordsol project with Vireo, confirmed, building on proven Hardanger performance
  • 90 GWh of fossil-free bio-LNG annually from manure, fish waste, and food fats
  • Long-term offtake secured with Gasum, all bio-LNG from Lista supplied under contract
  • Construction starts Q1 2026, first production targeted for Q1 2028
Summary
Nordsol has been selected by Norwegian renewable energy developer Vireo as technology vendor for biogas upgrading and liquefaction for the new Lista Biogass plant at Lista Fly- og Næringspark in Farsund, southern Norway. The selection is based on Nordsol’s liquefaction technology and professional execution demonstrated at the Hardanger project.
01 90 GWh of bio‑LNG annually from manure, fish waste, and food fats

Lista Biogass will treat a diversified mix of manure, fish waste, and food fats, with a design capacity of approximately 160,000 cubic metres of feedstock per year. The plant is expected to produce around 90 GWh of fossil-free bio-LNG annually for the transport and industrial sectors. Construction is scheduled to start in Q1 2026, with first production targeted for Q1 2028. All bio-LNG from the facility will be supplied to Nordic energy company Gasum under a long-term offtake agreement.

02 Shared commitment to local, circular energy solutions

With both Hardanger and Lista moving ahead, Vireo and Nordsol are contributing to the rapid build-out of Norway’s LBG infrastructure. The Lista project will enable the region to turn challenging organic residues into a low-carbon fuel, supporting national ambitions for cleaner heavy transport and industry.

“We are pleased to deepen our cooperation with Vireo and to contribute to the acceleration of bio-LNG production in Norway,” said Léon van Bossum, CEO at Nordsol. “This second project with Vireo underlines our shared commitment to local, circular energy solutions and demonstrates how our liquefaction technology can reliably and cost-effectively turn diverse waste streams into a clean, fossil-free fuel.”

03 Quality of technology and workmanship

Nordsol’s proprietary liquefaction technology is designed for decentralised, small-scale applications, integrating directly with biogas upgrading units. At Lista Biogass, this will enable efficient on-site conversion of biogas into LBG, reducing emissions in hard-to-abate segments such as long-haul road transport and maritime applications, while creating sustainable value for the local community.

Vireo is putting further trust in Nordsol by selecting them for our next project,” said Reinhard Lund-Mikkelson, CEO of Vireo. “Based on the performance so far on the Hardanger project, I am convinced that Nordsol will continue their level of professionalism by delivering good quality of technology and workmanship to our next project.”

04 About Vireo and Nordsol

Vireo is a Norwegian renewable energy developer focused on local biogas solutions. The Hardanger plant is one of several projects under development, with the aim of creating sustainable value chains for agriculture, aquaculture, and transport.

Nordsol is a technology pioneer in on-site production of fossil-free bio-LNG. Its proprietary systems convert biogas from advanced feedstocks, including organic waste streams that are no longer suitable for food, feed, or other high-value use, into high-purity bio-LNG for heavy road and maritime transport. With a focus on energy efficiency, reliability, and ease of operation, Nordsol’s installations are active across Europe. The company also owns and operates two production sites in the Netherlands.
