Key takeaways

Norway's biggest biomethane commitment has started

  • Three LBG plants in Norway built by Nordsol for Havila Biogass in Haugaland, Trøndelag and Innlandet.
  • 300 GWh of fossil-free fuel produced annually from local agricultural and aquaculture waste.
  • Partnership agreement targets 700+ GWh total, more than doubling Norway’s current biomethane supply.
Summary
Havila Biogass has selected Nordsol as its technology partner for the development of three identical liquefied biogas (LBG, bio-LNG) production plants in Norway. The facilities will be located in Haugaland, Trøndelag and Innlandet, and are scheduled to start operation in 2027/28.
01 From organic waste to LBG

At each site, organic waste from agriculture and aquaculture, such as manure and fish waste, will be processed into biogas. Nordsol’s advanced LBG production technology will then purify and liquefy the biomethane into LBG, a renewable fuel that directly supports the decarbonisation of Norway’s heavy industry and transport sectors.

Each plant will produce about 100 GWh of LBG per year, marking an important contribution to Havila Biogass’s mission of enabling zero-emission energy through the circular use of local resources. Together, these three projects represent the largest single national commitment to biomethane production and industrial decarbonisation to date.

02 Norway's largest single commitment to biomethane production

In addition to these projects, the two companies will work together under a Partnership Agreement to cost-effectively develop more than 400 GWh of additional LBG capacity in the coming years, bringing the total to over 700 GWh of LBG. This will more than double Norway’s current biomethane supply.

“We chose Nordsol for their proven, reliable and cost-efficient technology, but equally for the expertise and project approach of their people,“ said Kjell Evensgård, CEO of Havila Biogass. „Together, we are accelerating the scale-up of sustainable energy systems and taking another major step toward a circular, carbon-negative energy future.”

03 A unique partnership

With this unique partnership, Havila Biogass and Nordsol strengthen the foundation for Norway’s biogas-driven circular economy and energy security, combining local waste management with innovative European clean technology to supply reliable, fossil-free energy nationwide.

“Havila Biogass acts with the decisiveness that our time demands. Their ambition perfectly matches Nordsol’s drive to turn waste into value,“ said Léon van Bossum, CEO of Nordsol. „Bio-LNG offers a real opportunity to decarbonise today, and we’re proud to seize that opportunity together.”

Nordsol is a technology pioneer in on-site production of fossil-free bio-LNG. Its proprietary systems convert biogas from advanced feedstocks, including organic waste streams that are no longer suitable for food, feed, or other high-value use, into high-purity bio-LNG for heavy road and maritime transport. With a focus on energy efficiency, reliability, and ease of operation, Nordsol’s installations are active across Europe. The company also owns and operates two production sites in the Netherlands.
